I would centralize metric logic in a shared layer, define the business rules clearly, and prevent teams from reimplementing the same calculation differently. Consistency matters because analytics loses credibility when every dashboard uses a slightly different definition. The metric layer should become the source of truth.

I would look at join strategy, key distribution, and whether one side can be reduced first. If possible, I would filter earlier, pre-aggregate, or rewrite the join to reduce shuffle pressure and memory use. The solution is usually to shrink the problem before forcing the engine to solve it.

I would describe the original pain point, the specific change I made, and the measurable result. A strong answer connects technical improvement to reliability, cost, or freshness rather than just saying the code became cleaner. Interviewers usually want to see judgment and impact.

I would tie my answer to strong fundamentals, practical pipeline design, and the ability to make data dependable at scale. A good response should show that I can handle SQL, system thinking, debugging, and data quality with the rigor a Google-level role expects.
