I would connect my research interests to building systems that are not only capable but also reliable and aligned with human goals. A strong answer should show that I care about safety as a core research constraint, not as an afterthought.

I would explain the project, the trade-off I made, and why robustness mattered more than a small benchmark gain. The best answer shows judgment: knowing when a safer or more reliable result is the better scientific choice.

I would define a set of principles, use them to generate critiques or revisions, and train the model to prefer safer responses while preserving helpfulness. I would also evaluate both harmful-output reduction and capability retention so the model does not become safe but useless.

I would start by defining what alignment means in the target setting, then test the model across realistic tasks, edge cases, and adversarial inputs. Since values are complex and context-dependent, I would use a mix of behavioral evaluation, human review, and failure analysis rather than relying on a single metric.

Mechanistic interpretability tries to understand how a model implements behaviors internally, not just whether it performs well externally. It matters because understanding internal circuits and representations can help us predict failures, debug models, and reason about safety more reliably.
